The ‘Magic’ Smartphone That Can Follow Your Gestures

Late last month, Chinese tech giant Huawei unveiled its latest Mate 70 series of smartphones, marking a significant leap in mobile technology. Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei’s business group, described the Mate 70 lineup as “the most powerful Mate phones to date.” The series features three models: the Mate 70, the Mate 70 Pro, and the Mate 70 Pro Plus, with prices starting at approximately $760 (212,000 rupees).
One of the standout innovations of the Mate 70 is its status as the first mainstream smartphone to incorporate a satellite paging system—a groundbreaking feature highlighted by Yu during the launch event. In addition to this, the Mate 70 series boasts improved processors compared to the Mate 60 models and runs on Huawei’s operating system, HarmonyOS NEXT. According to Yu, these advancements collectively improve the phones’ performance by up to 40% over previous generations.
This release marks the largest-scale rollout of Huawei’s HarmonyOS, a key milestone as the company moves toward full independence from Google services, which it lost access to in 2019 due to US sanctions. As part of this transition, Huawei has already acquired 15,000 apps for HarmonyOS and aims to expand this number to 100,000 soon.
However, the Mate 70’s most eye-catching feature is its innovative Air Transmission file-sharing technology. Unlike Apple’s AirDrop, Huawei’s solution does not require devices to be within a specific range or connected via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. This feature leverages AI-powered Gesture AirDrop and the always-on camera capabilities of HarmonyOS NEXT, allowing seamless file transfers between Huawei devices.

About Huawei Mate 70
During the Mate 70’s launch, Yu showcased the technology in action. In a demonstration video, users transferred files by performing a simple palm gesture: closing their hand in front of the Mate 70’s screen and reopening it near another device. The file was instantly shared, eliminating the need for any physical connection.
The Magic Gesture of Huawei Mate 70
The Magic Gesture feature extends beyond file sharing, enabling users to perform various tasks using hand gestures. For example, users can turn the pages of an e-book, switch between apps, or select items with just a wave of their hands. This intuitive use of AI and gesture control makes the Mate 70 series uniquely innovative compared to other devices currently available in the market, including those from Apple.
While Apple’s AirDrop requires devices to be within 30 feet of each other and connected via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, Huawei claims its Air Transmission feature has no such limitations. This distinction has prompted widespread praise, with many highlighting Huawei’s ability to achieve what even Apple has not. Social media videos shared by users show enthusiastic reactions, with one user commenting, “You can’t deny this is surprising to the point of driving you crazy.”
Huawei has announced plans to roll out the Magic Gesture and Air Transmission features to its other flagship devices soon, solidifying its position as a leader in smartphone innovation. With the Mate 70 series, Huawei has set a new benchmark, pushing the boundaries of what smartphones can achieve and delivering technology that feels truly magical.
