Climate change is increasingly threatening the world’s most popular fruit, as Latin America and the Caribbean will gradually become unsuitable for banana cultivation, as revealed in a study.

It should be noted that two-thirds of the world’s banana cultivation occurs in Latin America and the Caribbean; however, due to climate change, these regions will no longer be suitable for cultivating this fruit by 2080.

Rising temperatures, climate change, and other factors are impacting fruit production in countries such as Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Colombia.

Bananas are the most widely consumed fruit in the world and are the fourth most important food crop, following wheat, rice, and maize.

Did you know that over 400 million people around the world enjoy bananas as a tasty and essential part of their diet? These delicious fruits contribute between 15% and 27% of their daily calories, making them a staple for many! Bananas do pack a punch in nutrition!

It is estimated that 80 percent of the world’s banana exports come from Latin America and the Caribbean, which are among the most affected regions by climate change. Although many varieties of this fruit exist, the Cavendish banana is consumed worldwide and is highly sensitive, requiring temperatures between 15 and 35 degrees Celsius and sufficient water to grow.

High temperatures or excessive water from floods or storms can damage banana plants.

The study found that the Cavendish banana variety is very vulnerable to climate change. The climate crisis affects their growing conditions and allows fungal diseases to spread, which harm banana crops.

The study held developed countries accountable for the climate crisis and urged them to immediately discontinue fossil fuel usage while fulfilling their commitments to provide funding to combat climate change.

Researchers stated that bananas are not only the most popular fruit in the world, but they also play an essential role in the diets of millions of people. Therefore, it is crucial to be aware of the risks posed to them by climate change and to take action.
